If you are ...	Then you must ...
starting a business and hiring an employee	register with the state to be an employer AND report each new employee to DSHS (requires an Employer Identification Number)
an out of state business hiring your first employee in Washington	register with the state to be an employer AND report each new employee to DSHS (requires an Employer Identification Number)
an established business, hiring your first employee	file a new master business application to add employees AND report each new employee to DSHS (requires an Employer Identification Number)
an in-state or out-of-state business hiring additional employees in Washington	report each new employee to DSHS (requires an Employer Identification Number)

 

Workers' compensation and unemployment insurance

Once you've registered with the state to be an employer, you will automatically be registered for

1. workers' compensation at the Department of Labor and Industries
   AND
2. unemployment insurance at the Employment Security Department
